How do you align your people strategy with the overall business goals of your organization?

VB: For me, people strategy is not separate from business strategy-it is an enabler. People Processes are not HR processes; they are business processes. I always start with understanding business trends, market trends in the industry, and challenges the company is facing. The next step is understanding the business drivers in my industry. Then I begin by clearly understanding the business goals-whether it’s organic or inorganic growth, innovation, cost optimisation, digital transformation, cultural change, etc. Once I know what the business wants to achieve, I translate that into what it means for people-what kind of capabilities, culture, leadership, organisation structure, and mindset are required.

For example, if the business wants to grow in new markets or wants to introduce new products, then my focus is on building lean project teams, identifying the internal team member who are experts in those areas or hiring the right talent,...
