The meaning of a “career” in the corporate world has changed dramatically over the past century. In the early industrial organization, career stability was largely associated with job security, long tenure, welfare and organisational loyalty. Employees expected to spend much of their working lives with one organisation, while employers expected commitment in return.
Today, that psychological contract has fundamentally changed. Technological disruption, globalisation, automation, artificial intelligence, organisational restructuring and changing skill requirements have made the traditional notion of a stable career increasingly difficult to sustain. Career stability is no longer simply about holding the same job or remaining with the same employer. It is increasingly about remaining employable, adaptable and capable of moving into new opportunities.
