A move from Compliance to Competitiveness
India’s Labour Codes promise simplicity, but their real impact is far more disruptive. Beneath the surface of consolidation and digitisation lies a fundamental shift in how value is created through people. As formalisation increases transparency and cost visibility, organisations are being pushed to confront uncomfortable questions around productivity, workforce segmentation and operating models. In this interview, Veteran HR Leader Shaleen Manik explains why Labour Codes are not an HR reform- but a strategic inflection point that will separate resilient enterprises from reactive ones.

Do you think that Labour Codes Rolling has shifted from a legal risk topic to a CEO/Board agenda to review the entire work Model, or is it merely an HR law compliance Issue?

SM For decades, the C-Suite viewed labour laws as a ‘fencing exercise’, a perimeter defined by HR to keep legal risks at bay. However, the rollout of new Labour Codes does more than simplify 29 laws into four; they redefine the Financial and Social Architecture of the company. What was once a legal risk to be mitigated is now a strategic lever to be pulled. In the Boardroom, Management is no longer asking, ‘Are we compliant?’ They are asking sharper, structural questions-

  • Can our productivity ratios absorb the increased cost of formalisation?
  • Should we rebalance automation versus manpower?
  • How should workforce segmentation evolve to balance flexibility with statutory obligations?
  • What structural redesign of the operating model is required to sustain competitiveness under formalised labour...
