Attrition in Hospitality Sector: A Management Capability Problem
The hospitality industry keeps solving attrition with the same tool that failed to prevent it: more functional training. The evidence points elsewhere - toward the quality of the person doing the managing.

The Numbers Nobody Wants to Own

Hotels do not have an attrition problem in the way most industries use that phrase. They have an attrition condition – a chronic, structural feature of how the sector staffs, promotes and manages people. Recent industry estimates put overall attrition in Indian hospitality at close to 30%, nearly double the 17.1% cross-industry average reported for 2025, and sector reports on premium and luxury segments have recorded attrition running as high as 55% in specific operating environments. A workforce where three in ten employees exit within a year, and where the ratio is closer to one in two at some properties, is not experiencing turnover. It is experiencing failure to hold on to people it has already spent money recruiting and training.

This is compounded by workforce composition: roughly 60% of India’s hospitality employees are under 30, meaning the industry is disproportionately staffed by people early enough in their careers to be forming their first real opinions about what management should look like...
